Transcription Tips
Need some tips for preparing your audio for transcription? No problem. Here are a few tips that can help us to provide you with the most accurate transcript:

  1. Try to eliminate open doors and windows to minimize outside background noise (i.e., airplanes, cars skidding, the loud guy who laughs when passing your door, emergency vehicles, etc.)

  2. When holding a focus group, meeting or conference call, have one participant speak at a time. If names are important, try having participants state their first name before their response. (i.e., "Diana speaking. blah...blah...important comment.")

  3. Have a microphone for each speaker when possible. If that's not possible, kindly remind participants to speak into the mic to best capture their important comment.
  4. Eliminate eating while speaking. Munching on food distorts speech while clinking forks and knives can drown out important words. We also think it may help keep our transcriptionists from getting hunger pangs while working.

  5. Test your equipment before recording the real thing. Low batteries and faulty microphones can make for a bad recording.

  6. Give as much information on your recording as possible. Knowing the number of speakers, the topic discussed, or who the audience is (physicians, children, teenagers, etc.) can help us greatly!

  7. Record on maximum speed to avoid expanding the tape and distorting speech.

  8. Test the acoustics in the room you are in. High ceilings and rooms too large for your crowd can affect the quality of your audio.
